Traditional Painter's Palette
This palette has been designed by Skill-Based Art: A Learning Resource for Art Students & Artist-Teachers and manufactured in Melbourne, Australia.
The plywood in which this palette is made is composed of fine quality birch veneers that have been taken from Russian Birch trees (Baltic Birch) and bound together with marine grade glue. The cooler climate of Russia is an ideal inhabitants for the birch trees as it creates a stable environment that is conducive to the wood’s structural integrity. The kidney shape that the palette embodies stands by tradition and acknowledges the rich lineage of painters who held the palette in centuries past. 5-plies are included in each palette which have been applied evenly to ensure there are no voids in any of the layers. Knots and surface imperfections in the wood have been removed and sealed using minimum wood filler. This assures that a balanced, stable and durable surface is achieved which paints can be mixed on. The thumb hole featured has been strategically placed to enable the weight of the palette, which is approximately 640 grams, to be distributed equally when held. Ergonomically, the palette has been designed to ensure the painter has a comfortable grip, therefore, the thumb hole is bored wide enough and sanded smoothly to avoid excessive stress on the painter’s thumb, hand and wrist. The design of the palette caters for both left and right-handed painters (branded side facing up for right-handed painters holding the palette in their left hand, and branded side facing down for left-handed painters holding the palette in their right hand). The palette has been hand-finished through the process of careful sanding and application of 4 coats of linseed oil is carried out, beginning with lean coats to penetrate deep into the wood’s grain and finishing with fatter coats to seal the wood’s surface. Due to the hand finished nature of the palette, the weight, dimensions and surface finish may vary slightly from palette-to-palette. Each palette is branded, sanded and sealed by Emilio Longo, Founder and Director of Skill-Based Art: A Learning Resource for Art Students & Artist-Teachers.
