Interview with Ted Dansey
Interview with Ted Dansey
In this video, Emilio Longo interviews Australian realist watercolourist, Ted Dansey. Ted’s journey to become a fine watercolourist begun in the commercial arts during the 1970s, 80s and 90s which saw him occupy a number of positions in the field, chiefly, creative director and senior designer for the Victorian State Government. Developing his oil and watercolour paintings independently in his own time during these years satisfied his longing to become a fine artist, something which he dreamt about since his childhood. Discovering the Victorian Artists Society in 1990 enabled Ted to train with renowned Australian watercolourist, David Taylor and thereafter, taking on the managerial position of the society for 11 years. After this period, Ted made the conscious decision to dedicate his life to painting and teaching in Melbourne, Australia, as well as internationally. Topics discussed include, Ted’s early years in the commercial arts, discovering the watercolour medium and coming to work with it exclusively, involvement with the Victorian Artists Society, travelling abroad painting and experiencing the various lineages of the realist watercolour tradition and teaching workshops to beginner, intermediate and advanced students, as well as Ted’s approach to creating a watercolour painting and his professional insight on the unique handling characteristics of the medium. The interview also brings into perspective the decline in standards of visual arts training over the centuries and some of the most accomplished watercolourists working today who keep the artform alive through their painting and teaching.
