Interview with Gwendoline Krumins
Interview with Gwendoline Krumins
In this video, Emilio Longo interviews Australian realist painter, Gwendoline Krumins. Gwen commenced her training in the 1970s with Vance Knight, a realist painter who descended from the lineage of Max Meldrum and his school of tonal realism. This period of study was succeeded by a solid grounding in 19th century French academic technique through Jacque Wengrow, a realist painter who hailed from the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Working arduously at her craft and receiving numerous accolades and awards, as well as transmitting her discoveries through teaching for over four decades from her home studio in Melbourne, Australia, Gwen has established herself as a laudable name in the field of Australian realist painting. Topics discussed include, Gwen’s training and journey to attain the skills necessary to paint tonally realistically, her teaching philosophy, curriculum and personal drawing and painting techniques, as well as her relationship with the visual world as a realist painter and her involvement and ongoing membership with two of Australia’s oldest art societies, the Victorian Artists Society and the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. Discussion also focuses on Gwen’s opinion on the place of visual arts training within the Victorian Curriculum and the state of realist painting in Australia today.
