Interview with Ben Winspear
Interview with Ben Winspear
In this video, Emilio Longo interviews Australian tonal realist painter, Ben Winspear. Ben’s history includes working as an earthmover and labourer in numerous trades before having a revelation in his 30’s which caused him to dedicate his life to painting and teaching. Being surrounded by art throughout his childhood in England, Ben’s early influences include his grandfather, the late English painter, William Strachan. Thereafter, during the late 1990’s, he would come to train with the late Australian painter, Lance McNeill, who would help decode the craft and art of representational painting. Establishing himself as a highly competent teacher of realist painting in Victoria, Ben has successfully built his very own online art academy, as well as teaching classes and workshops to beginning and advanced students in several artists’ societies throughout Victoria. Leading by example, Ben is an award-winning realist artist working across a variety of genres which include landscape, still life, portraiture and the human figure. Topics discussed include, the pros and cons of coming to art later in life, ideas which underpin the creation of Ben’s paintings, the difficulties and pleasures of plein air painting and the artist’s adoption of an abstract approach to painting realism. Moreover, Ben provides explanation of his travels and studies after winning the AME Bale Travelling Scholarship and Art Prize in 2016, as well as his experiences of being a brand ambassador for a variety of art material companies.
