In this video, Australian tonal realist painter, Ray Wilson demonstrates painting the tonal realist still life from life. A comprehensive breakdown of each step of the direct painting process is covered with particular focus on colour selection, underdrawing with a brush and proceeding straight to laying in colour without the establishment of an underpainting beforehand. Additionally, Ray’s method of painting sheds light on suggestive, loose brushstrokes rather than exacting, tight brushstrokes and form modelling to indicate texture in the subject.
