Interview with Michael Coyle
This video features an interview with Classical Realist painter, Michael Coyle. Michael lives in Minnesota and has become one of the finest Impressionist landscape painters in America. In 1979, Michael began taking evening classes at Atelier Lack, whilst partaking in numerous summer workshops taught by Stephen Gjertson, Kirk Richards, Don Koestner and George Herman. During this time, Mr. Coyle also studied with Annette LeSueur who was teaching anatomy at Atelier Lack. With her encouragement, Michael applied for the full-time atelier program at Atelier Lack in the Spring of 1980. After completing the four-year program, Michael continued his study informally with Mr. Lack and Mr. Gjertson. During this time, Michael worked collaborative with Mr. Lack, Ms. LeSueur and Gary Christensen to establish The American Society of Classical Realism. Between the years of 1985 to 1997, Michael taught at Atelier LeSueur whilst simultaneously spending five years teaching at Atelier Lack. This was supplemented by teaching landscape painting during the summers on the shores of Lake Superior.
Michael meets the true definition of a Classical Realist in that he can paint in the various genres of still-life, portrait, figure, interior genre and imaginative paintings. Today, he lives with his wife and son and continues to paint and teach in his studio-school, the Coyle Studio of Fine Art, located in Excelsior, Minnesota.
