Demonstration with Fiona Bilbrough
Demonstration with Fiona Bilbrough
In this video, Australian tonal realist painter, Fiona Bilbrough demonstrates painting the tonal realist self-portrait from life. Particular attention is centred on positioning oneself correctly in front of a mirror and establishing common points of measurement on the portrait. Following this, Fiona provides comprehensive insight into her approach to tonal realist painting which charts creating an underpainting using tones of brown to map out shadow shapes on the portrait, then working directly over the underpainting using the Zorn palette to generate lifelike skin tones, bringing the portrait to life. Additionally, explanation is provided regarding economy of brushstrokes and how colours can be mixed strategically with a limited palette to bring the painting to resolution.
