A Sketchbook for the Student of Traditional Realism

The paper featured in this sketchbook was developed in the mid 1900’s by Cartiere Magnani Mill; a paper mill that was originally located mid-way between Florence and Lucca, on the hill tops overlooking the town of Pescia, in Italy. The Italian painter, Pietro Annigoni, collaborated with the papermakers to create a substrate which became his preference for all of his works on paper, including oil and tempera paintings, in which case the paper was prepared with rabbit skin glue. Throughout the 20th century, Annigoni was known as the patriarch of realism, he was an irrepressible force who created drawings and paintings that contend with the masters of the past in both technical aptitude and emotional impact. In 2002, the owner of Magnani Papers, Francesco Natali, met with former pupils of Annigoni (the Annigonini) at the original paper mill and they explained the recipe that Annigoni and the earlier papermakers had used, enabling them to again make the paper. Today, the Magnani Mill has relocated to Cordenons, a town which is one hundred kilometres north of Venice, where it continues to produce the paper, using the identical ingredients and the same cylinder mould machine that were specified by Annigoni himself. The paper is made of one hundred percent cotton and is acid free with all PH neutral and chlorine derivatives being removed. It weighs 250gsm, and it’s hot pressed with a light texture and a smooth finish. It has a warm beige undertone making it ideal for pencil drawings that are heightened with white chalk. The paper can be used with a range of dry media such as graphite, charcoal, chalk, and pastel; and wet media such as watercolour. It has been lightly sized with starch so it can be prepared with an acrylic or true gesso coating, or rabbit skin glue and then used for painting in oils. It can also be used for printmaking, and is particularly suitable for etchings. Upon closer inspection, one will notice black fibres which have been included in the paper’s ingredients to add visual appeal; an addition requested specifically by Annigoni. As such, the paper is robust and can be worked on thoroughly, making it a versatile choice for the art student. The sketchbook itself is section sewn and bound in Melbourne, Australia, in eight separate parts to ensure the binding will not come undone and the hardcover is wrapped in black buckram which makes for a durable casing that is stable and strong.
