Interview with Ray Wilson

In this video, Emilio Longo interviews Australian tonal realist painter, Ray Wilson. Ray’s background involves working as a public servant for over 22 years with a particular focus on innovation and technology. Feeling deeply compelled to paint in earnest, Ray developed his drawing and painting skills independently for some time before seeking training with some of Australia’s most well know traditional representational painters who include, Margaret Cowling, Max Wilks, Gregory Smith, Ray Hewitt, Stephen Doyle and Ben Winspear. Through distilling the teachings of these artists into his own practice, Ray has prevailed as an established painter today who is quickly gaining recognition for his still lifes, portraits and landscapes. Topics discussed include, Ray’s early years studying economics and commerce, joining the Moonee Valley Art Group in the 1980s, discovering the Victorian Artists Society in the 1990s and being elected as a council member and then taking on the position of Treasurer for 3 years, followed by holding the Manager/Secretary role for 5 years.

Throughout the interview, Ray also discusses his experience of studying with various artist-teachers, his adoption of the methodology of painting known as the Max Meldrum School of Tonal Realism, beginning to teach workshops as well as judging art competitions and marketing his work online.
