Demonstration with Julian Bruere
In this video, Australian realist watercolourist, Julian Bruere demonstrates painting a romantic seascape in the studio using a colour study that is inspired by a black and white watercolour sketch previously painted as a class demonstration. Julian’s process is organised into various stages of progression which include establishing the composition using the reference sketch to create an underdrawing in pencil, through to laying in washes of watercolour to build the tonal scheme and mood of the painting. Throughout the demonstration, Julian shares information on the organisation of his palette, the benefits of including gouache in a watercolour painting, adding breadcrumbs and scratching back to achieve textural effects. Additionally, Julian elaborates on his paper format, brush selection and styles, creating ‘grunge’ colours, as well as how to implement brush ruling techniques.
